Location:
Marawila is a wealthy region. The main road offers a
variety of small shops with a great range of goods. The fishing
village Marawila is mainly populated by Roman Catholic villagers and
upper middleclass families. A church as well as some social
institutions are located in Marawila. The shore is unaffected and
fishermen can still be seen at the beach. A palm grove separates the
beach from most of the hotels.
In 2004 the Tourist Board Sri Lanka declared
Marawila as Tourist Development Zone. This means an external water
supply with fresh water as well as construction of new paved roads
and other infrastructural changes.
With 45minutes the transfer from Bandaranaike
International Airport is minor compared to the transfer of 2 or more
hours to the tourist regions in the south. The overall travel time
to Colombo is 1.5 to 2 hours. Busses as well as private drivers are
a convenient way to get to Sri Lankas capital. The central location
at the west coast is perfect to get to other places and sights.
Negombo is about half an hour driving time from Marawila and the old
Fort, the cemetery in the dunes and various shops are worth to
visit. The street to Marawila is in good condition and is mainly
two-lane.
